Sometimes I wonder what happen when there isn't any adult around. Well fortunately the camera was around and we have some interesting shots. I thought the above photos is one of the bests. So it is at the topof this article.

Finding the right balance.

Each year a lot of efforts are put in behind the scene to ensure the success of every Easter celebration. It is no different for these boys as well coming from various backgrounds. Though many may not fully grasped the full meaning of the rituals and symbols, one thing is certain, it is an enriching experience for them at this point of their young lives. Hopefully it will later prove to be beneficial to them.

TRIP TO KOTA KINABALU

We spoke about making a trip to Kota Kinabalu on many occasions with the boys. The Episcopal ordination of His Grace the Most Rev John Wong Coadjutor Archbishop of Kota Kinabalu was too good to be missed. The timing though meant most of the boys cannot make it because of the PMR and SPM exminations. We managed to get what was originally intended done though. The boys that could come made full use of the time and most definitely enjoyed it. The journey starts at 3.00am and most left their houses as early as 2.00am though the actual start of the journey was 4.00am plus due to unforseen delay. We got to Ranau in fairly good time for breakfast.

For some, hunger pangs hit again in less than 15 minutes! This is despite having buns or breads in the car. Talk about growing kids! Anyway as in many major undertakings, local knowledge is essential if one's to succeed. After taking some more buns in the car we called our local contact in Kota Kinabalu.

We actually reached KK around 12.00pm thinking that we had plenty of time to get ready after lunch as the ordination starts at 4.00pm. Anyway, this was quickly shot down by our local "intel". We were told to be at the Cathedral by 1.00pm instead of 2.00pm as originally intended! So we told the boys, "no lunch" and we proceeded to the hotel to check in. By the time we made it to the Cathedral, it was well past 2.00pm after a quick bath for everyone and some more "makan" of buns. Fortunately we brought along extras.

Eat while walking......such great effort. Everyone must eat also. Here everybody quickly took the buns while walking to the Cathedral. We finished with the eating by the time we reached the Cathedral door. True to his words, our local contact booked us seats! The Cathedral was already almost packed with only reserved seats available. A bit later announcement was made that new "arrivals" will have to be seated at the Parish Hall. Indeed we were grateful for the seats whilst not front row but was inside the Cathedral. I did wonder though whether any of the guys will be hungry again despite my best attempts to teach them a bit of delay gratification, not giving in to our natural cravings so easily. Though everyone tried not to, they did managed to grab some needed rest while waitiing for the Eucharistic Celebration to begin as well as during the celebration. We witness an historical event and a beautiful ordination. Great sermons as well especially that as baptized Christians, we are all called to the priesthood but only those with faith can recognized the calling to religious life. At least that was what I tought I heard as it was in "Hakka". It was a moving experience for me. Though we originally intended to take photographs with the new Coadjutor Archbishop, only one managed to do so. The rest "quickly" adjourned to the Parish Hall for food.

After the dinner, we went off for the Suria Mall. Though it was drizzling, nobody mind and we walk to our cars which was parked across from the Sacred Heart Cathedral. We managed to catch about 2 hours at the mall as we wanted to rest early so we can go for morning Mass at the Carmelite Monastery at 6.30am. Again our local "intel" was very useful as he confirmed that the newly ordained Archbishop will celebrate Mass there! Our adventure though continued even whilst visiting the Mall! This however is "privy" to our "inner" circle only and not for public consumption. Anyway, it's a good thing as we originally intended to go to the Carmelite, 2 members of our group actually thought the Sacred Heart Cathedral was the Carmelite! Talk about the need for exposure! One poor Sister received a written petition for prayer given by one of our boys!

Everybody managed to get up the next morning and we just made it for the Carmelite Mass. It was again another experience for our group and the "morning breakfast" was an added bonus. We took some photos for remembrance including 2 shots with His Grace the Most Rev John Wong. After that we went for breakfast again! We then adjourned to One Borneo for some jalan jalan cap it off with lunch in Mac D. We left KK about 3.00pm reaching Sandakan at 11.00pm plus.

It was raining on that day. So the deal could not be done. It was meant to avoid any last minute rush. Anyway, the it was the weather......so an agreement was sought and the model agreed upon. I went back on the 08-07-09 and got the thing done.

Indah Traffic Light

For those new in town, just take note that JPJ has installed a camera at the Indah traffic light junction. Anybody caught on camera hitting the red light.... well you know the fine........ its RM300 only. JPJ will be hoping to key in all the offenses before the next round of road tax renewal.

Launching The Social Communication Commission

The 4th July 2009 marked an important date for the Diocese of Sandakan. It is this day that not only America celebrates its Independence Day but also the launching of the Social Communication Commission for the Diocese of Sandakan. Here I have taken a few shots as the Bishop Julius gave his opening address. Full report will be released on the Diocese's blog. Representative from all the parishes were present for the meeting.

Knights Of The Altar Meeting (KOTA)

The KOTA had their usual meeting today (05-04-2009) at the St. Mary's Cathedral Sandakan. Almost everyone attended the meeting. The meeting fixed 15-08-2009, 8.00am for preparation for Assumption day. There was also discussion about team building games held during the recent BBQ. Members were also briefed about the New Year for the Priesthood as recently declared by the Pope.

There was also a briefing on the dangers of smoking and the harm caused to one's health. Members were also very keen to find out whether they can add their names to the t shirts given to them.

The Cathedral Parish of St. Mary's Sandakan Sunday School English section held their family day today from 8.30am to 10.30am. It was a "pot luck" time with family and friends bringing various dishes. Everyone had a good time and family members joined the kids in their games. The backdrop was nicely decorated late last night for the event.

Regional Social Communication Meeting

The Regional Social Communication Meeting was held from the 22-06-2009 to the 24-06-2009 at the Sibu Pastoral Centre, Sarawak. Representatives form the various Dioceses of Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei attended the meeting. Bishop Cornelius Sim from the Diocese of Brunei was the incoming President of the Committee. After the meeting the Sibu Diocese arranged for the delegates to be taken for a short "city tour". They visited the Sacred Heart Cathedral, St. Mary of Divine Mercy and St. Teresa Church.

PILGRIMAGE TO ST. PAUL

On the 20-06-2009, the Knights participated in the pilgrimage to St. Paul Church Ulu Dusun. After getting up very early and breakfast in the Sibuga Market, we arrived at St. Paul's at around 10am. It was a trip planned more than a month ago. The Parish Pastoral Council of St. Mary's was the other group that also went for the pilgrimage. After Mass, there was a fellowship held at the Parish Hall. Here we have a group photo taken at the Sanctuary of the Church.

All who participated were issued with a Certificate. The Knights were dressed in their new green t-shirts and served Mass during the Eucharistic Celebration.

BBQ NIGHT KOTA 2009

The Altar Servers of the St. Mary's Parish held it's BBQ night on the 19-06-2009. Most of it's members attended the function together with some of their parents. It was a sort of "pot luck" style and some brought along their "dishes". The parish priest Rev. Fr. Thomas Makajil also took time out to be with us.

Other than slide shows, the boys also took part in some team building activities and a "fashion show". A group photo was also taken to record the event. Overall it was a good time for everyone and in the end everyone helped with the cleanup. It was also during this time that the servers were given their T-Shirts. They stayed the night at the Fr. Mulders' Centre and will travel to St. Paul's Church Ulu Dusun for a pilgrimage on the next day.
